I have a 15" MacBook Pro from June/July 2007 and I just bought a Western Digital MyPassport Essential 500 GB self powered USB external harddrive. <br>Thing mounts fine is fast and I even render to and from it, and video it from there as well. Works just as well as an external with a power source. Maybe they decreased or changed the specs on the newer Macs that the ports aren't self powered anymore?
